Larry the Cucumber muzzled by NBC Secularists

A few weeks back, I received a good news email from BigIdeas, producers of the Veggie Tales series of Christian-values-based childrens videos that my daughter, YK, loves. It explained that the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) would soon begin airing new Veggie Tales cartoons. The news pleased me. It also astounded me.

I wondered how on earth the censors would allow the word “God” to be used on television if it was not attached to an epithet. I watched the first episodes with YK and enjoyed them. But of course, NBC had the owners of the Veggie Tales franchise edit out all of the Christianity-related stuff; they only wanted the “values” parts of the adventures of Larry.Cast of Veggie Tales

While it is a shame that the secularists have such a grip on NBC that “God Loves You” is more offensive to the senses than some of the other shows in its lineup, I’m still pleased that the “values” parts of Veggie Tales are being left in for two reasons: 1) even with the biblical references removed, the value lessons each episode teaches is based on Christianity and; 2) once kids fall in love with the adorable vegetables, they’ll start bugging their parents to buy Veggie Tales on video.

And I’m thrilled that YK loves them. If she wants to watch the story of Jonah, with the title character played by an Asparagus I don’t have a problem with it. Since we have not yet found a church since moving, I’m glad that there Larry, Bob and company are available.

The values I learned when I was her age (4), have become an integral part of my moral compass. I just pray that the predominance of secular, limp-wristed morality that permates much of what she sees, hears and will be exposed to, no matter how hard we attempt to shield her from it.

The story of NBC’s odd spin on being politically correct has gained some traction in the MSM and in the blogosphere. And that’s a good thing: More people will watch the shows.

Here’s just a smattering of what’s being written about the minor scandal:

WorldNetDaily: VeggieTales too Christian for NBC

Monastic Musings: TV and Religion: VeggieTales

On NBC, ‘Veggie Tales’ can’t keep the faith

Tongue Tied - VeggieTales too Christian for NBC

“VeggieTales to Air on NBC Minus Most Religious Content”

The Seventh Age: Veggie Tales Too Racy for NBC

While at first it perturbed me that this lunacy was going on, I’ve done a 180 on the issue. The important thing is that Christian values, the values that my ancestors adored as they worked to give us this nation and all the blessings and innovations that make life in America a pretty wonderful experience, may be growing some roots once again.

It’s been a long time coming.
